Hypoallergenic Cat Breeds for People with Allergies
First, the honest part: no cat is truly allergen-free. Cat allergies react to a protein (Fel d 1) in saliva and skin, not to fur itself, so "hypoallergenic" really means "produces less of the protein" or "sheds less of it into your home." For many people with mild-to-moderate allergies, that difference is enough to share a home comfortably with the right cat.
The breeds below are the ones flagged as hypoallergenic in breed registries, a mix of low-shedding coats (the Rexes), unusual coat types (the Sphynx's near-hairlessness), and breeds documented to produce less Fel d 1 (the Siberian, famously, despite its magnificent coat).
Whatever breed you're drawn to, test before you commit: spend real time, an hour, ideally more than once, with the specific cat you're considering. Individual cats vary enormously in allergen production, even within a breed.

💛 Often waiting at your local shelter
Purebred cats end up in shelters and breed-specific rescues more often than people expect, including Rexes, Siberians, and Sphynxes. A shelter or rescue is also the one place you can honestly test-drive: spend time with a specific cat, gauge your reaction, and adopt the individual animal your allergies have already approved.
Common questions
What is the most hypoallergenic cat?
The Siberian and the Balinese are most often cited for producing less Fel d 1 protein, while the Sphynx and the Rex breeds spread less of it around by having little coat to shed. "Most hypoallergenic" still isn't "non-allergenic" - always test with the individual cat.
Can I live with a cat if I'm allergic?
Many people with mild-to-moderate allergies do, happily: a lower-allergen breed, a bedroom kept cat-free, a HEPA filter, and weekly brushing (by the non-allergic human) manage most cases. Talk to an allergist about your specific severity, and spend time with the actual cat before adopting.
Are hairless cats hypoallergenic?
Mostly, but not because of the missing fur. Sphynxes still make the allergen in their skin and saliva; there's simply no coat to distribute it through your house, and regular baths (which they need anyway) wash much of it away. Many allergy sufferers do well with them; some still react.
