Bengal
Cat breed
Bengals are a lot of fun to live with, but they're definitely not the cat for everyone, or for first-time cat owners. Extremely intelligent, curious and active, they demand a lot of interaction and woe betide the owner who doesn't provide it.
More about the Bengal
Bengal is a geographical, ethnolinguistic, historically geopolitical region in South Asia north of the Bay of Bengal. It is politically divided between the sovereign state of Bangladesh, the Indian state of West Bengal, and Karimganj district in the Indian state of Assam.
Living with a Bengal
A wild-looking, high-octane cat with a leopard coat and an athlete's energy.
Personality & fit
Confident, curious, and intensely active, Bengals are the adventurers of the cat world, climbing, exploring, and often loving water. They're affectionate but demand engagement.
Exercise & energy
Very high, they need lots of play, tall climbing space, and puzzle toys. A bored Bengal will invent its own (often destructive) fun.
Grooming & coat
Easy: the short, pelt-like coat needs only occasional brushing and sheds little.
Training
Extremely smart, they learn tricks, fetch, faucet-opening, and leash walking. Channel that brain or they'll channel it themselves.
Health to watch
Generally robust but predisposed to hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM), certain eye conditions (PRA), and patellar luxation. Buy from health-screening breeders.
Good to know
Not a low-effort cat, they need real enrichment and interaction. Some areas regulate ownership of early-generation Bengals.
