Siberian
Cat breed
The Siberians dog like temperament and affection makes the ideal lap cat and will live quite happily indoors. Very agile and powerful, the Siberian cat can easily leap and reach high places, including the tops of refrigerators and even doors.
More about the Siberian
Siberia is an extensive geographical region comprising all of North Asia, from the Ural Mountains in the west to the Pacific Ocean in the east. It has formed a part of the sovereign territory of Russia and its predecessor states since the lengthy conquest of Siberia, which began with the fall of the Khanate of Sibir in 1582 and concluded with the annexation of Chukotka in 1778. Siberia is vast and sparsely populated, covering an area of over 13.1 million square kilometres (5,100,000 mi2) โ about three-quarters of Russia's total area, but home to roughly a quarter of Russia's population. Novosibirsk, Krasnoyarsk, and Omsk are its largest cities.
Living with a Siberian
A big, athletic cat with a dog-like devotion to its people and a knack for turning every high shelf into a lookout post.
Personality & fit
Siberians are affectionate, playful, and genuinely loyal, many will greet you at the door, follow you room to room, and settle in for cuddles once the energy burns off. They're social and easygoing enough to fit well with kids, other pets, and even dogs, making them a great choice for busy, people-filled households.
Exercise & energy
These are agile, high-energy cats that love to jump, climb, and explore vertical space, so tall cat trees and sturdy shelving are a must. Daily play sessions with wand toys or puzzle feeders help channel that athleticism in a good way.
Grooming & coat
Their thick, water-resistant triple coat looks like a lot of work but is surprisingly low-maintenance, a weekly brush usually keeps it in check, with more frequent sessions during seasonal shedding. Many allergy-sensitive owners tolerate Siberians better than other breeds, though no cat is fully non-allergenic.
Training
Smart and eager to engage, Siberians pick up on routines, puzzle toys, and even leash walking with patience and positive reinforcement. Their intelligence means they enjoy interactive challenges, not just food rewards.
Health to watch
Generally a robust breed, but hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (a heart condition) can show up in some lines, so cardiac screening and regular vet checkups are worth prioritizing. Otherwise, good nutrition and weight management go a long way toward a long, healthy life.
Good to know
Give them vertical space. Siberians will find the top of your fridge or a doorframe with or without your permission, so it's easier to plan for it than fight it.
