Cornish Rex
Cat breed
This is a confident cat who loves people and will follow them around, waiting for any opportunity to sit in a lap or give a kiss. He enjoys being handled, making it easy to take him to the veterinarian or train him for therapy work. The Cornish Rex stay in kitten mode most of their lives and well into their senior years.
More about the Cornish Rex
The Cornish Rex is a breed of domestic cat. The Cornish Rex only has down hair. Most breeds of cat have three different types of hair in their coats: the outer fur or "guard hairs", a middle layer called the "awn hair"; and the down hair or undercoat, which is very fine and about 1 cm long. Cornish Rexes only have the undercoat. The curl in their fur is caused by a different mutation and gene than that of the Devon Rex. The breed originated in Cornwall, Great Britain.
Living with a Cornish Rex
A whisper-soft, curly-coated acrobat who'd rather be curled in your lap or leaping off the bookshelf than doing anything alone.
Personality & fit
Cornish Rex cats are people-obsessed, following their favorite humans from room to room and hopping into any open lap that presents itself. They're playful well into old age, staying kitten-like in energy and curiosity, and they genuinely enjoy being held and handled, which makes vet visits and travel easier than with most cats.
Exercise & energy
Very high energy for a cat, expect climbing, chasing, and general acrobatics throughout the day. Interactive toys, cat trees, and daily play sessions help burn off that curiosity and keep them out of mischief.
Grooming & coat
Their coat is just a fine, curly undercoat with no guard hairs, so it's low-shedding and often well tolerated by people with cat allergies. Skip harsh brushing, a soft cloth or gentle hand-petting keeps the coat healthy, and because they lack a full coat, they can get chilly, so a warm blanket or sweater in cold weather is appreciated.
Training
Sharp and eager to engage, Cornish Rex cats take well to leash walking, puzzle toys, and even simple tricks. Their people-focused nature makes positive reinforcement with treats and play highly effective.
Health to watch
Generally a hardy breed, but their thin coat means they're prone to getting cold and can be more sensitive to skin issues, so keep an eye on their skin and provide warmth. Routine vet checkups will catch anything early, and this breed tends to age well overall.
Good to know
This is not a background cat. Cornish Rex cats need companionship and will actively seek you out, so they're best suited to households that want an involved, lap-loving pet rather than an independent one.
