Ocicat
Cat breed
Loyal and devoted to their owners, the Ocicat is intelligent, confident, outgoing, and seems to have many dog traits. They can be trained to fetch toys, walk on a lead, taught to 'speak', come when called, and follow other commands.
More about the Ocicat
The Ocicat is an all-domestic breed of domestic cat which resembles a wild cat but has no (recent) wild DNA in its gene pool. It has a spotted tabby coat, and is named for its resemblance to the ocelot. The breed was established by crossbreeding the Siamese and Abyssinian, and later on American Shorthair would be added.
Living with a Ocicat
A wild-looking spotted cat with a golden retriever's heart, bold, social, and always ready for the next adventure.
Personality & fit
Despite that ocelot-like coat, the Ocicat has zero wild DNA and a thoroughly people-oriented personality, outgoing, confident, and genuinely dog-like in how devoted they are to their humans. They're social butterflies who do well with kids, other cats, and even dogs, but they want to be included in everything and don't love being left alone for long stretches.
Exercise & energy
Very high energy, these cats need real daily play, not just a toy left on the floor. Interactive games, climbing towers, and puzzle feeders help burn off their athletic curiosity; a bored Ocicat will find their own entertainment, which isn't always convenient for you.
Grooming & coat
Their short, sleek coat is about as low-maintenance as it gets, a quick weekly brush handles loose hair and keeps that spotted pattern gleaming.
Training
Highly intelligent and eager to engage, Ocicats take to training remarkably well, many learn to fetch, walk on a leash, come when called, and even respond to verbal cues like 'speak.' Keep sessions positive and food-motivated, and lean into their smarts with puzzle toys to keep their mind busy.
Health to watch
Generally sturdy cats, though as with many pedigreed breeds it's worth asking breeders about heart health (hypertrophic cardiomyopathy) and kidney function screening. Routine vet checkups will catch most issues early.
Good to know
This is not a low-key lap cat. Ocicats thrive with active households that can match their energy and social needs, and they tend to do best when they have company (feline, canine, or human) during the day.
