Balinese

Cat breed

โœ“ Hypoallergenic

Balinese are curious, outgoing, intelligent cats with excellent communication skills. They are known for their chatty personalities and are always eager to tell you their views on life, love, and what youโ€™ve served them for dinner.

More about the Balinese

The Balinese is a long-haired breed of domestic cat with Siamese-style point coloration and sapphire-blue eyes. The Balinese is also known as the purebred long-haired Siamese since it originated as a natural mutation of that breed and hence is essentially the same cat but with a medium-length silky coat and a distinctively plumed tail.

Living with a Balinese

A long-haired Siamese with just as much to say, sleek, sapphire-eyed, and always ready to join the conversation.

Personality & fit

Balinese cats are smart, social, and deeply attached to their people, often following you room to room to stay in on the action. They're famously chatty, holding forth with opinions on everything from mealtime to your choice of chair, and they do best with owners who enjoy an interactive, talkative companion rather than a quiet lap cat.

Exercise & energy

Energy and curiosity run high, so daily play is a must, think wand toys, puzzle feeders, and climbing perches to keep that quick mind busy. A bored Balinese will find their own entertainment, which usually means redecorating your shelves.

Grooming & coat

The silky, medium-length coat lacks a thick undercoat, so it's less prone to matting than you'd expect and sheds only moderately. A weekly brush keeps it smooth and cuts down on loose hair around the house.

Training

Highly intelligent and eager to engage, Balinese take well to clicker training, puzzle toys, and even leash walks. Their vocal nature makes it easy to know what they want, use that back-and-forth to your advantage during training sessions.

Health to watch

Generally sturdy, but like other Siamese-related breeds they can be prone to respiratory issues and some hereditary conditions like progressive retinal atrophy. Routine vet checkups and keeping an eye on breathing or vision changes help catch anything early.

Good to know

This is not a background cat. Balinese crave company and conversation, so they're happiest in homes where someone's around most of the day. If you love a cat that talks back, you'll be in good company.
