More about the Selkirk Rex
The Selkirk Rex is a cat breed with curly hair that was developed in the United States in the late 1980s. The Selkirk Rex is distinct from the other Rex breeds by the thick quality of its coat, while LaPerm, Devon Rex and Cornish Rex have sparser curly coats. The Selkirk Rex are known for their placid, social and cuddly nature.
Living with a Selkirk Rex
A curly-coated teddy bear of a cat who'd rather be in your lap than just about anywhere else.
Personality & fit
Patient, affectionate, and a little silly, the Selkirk Rex is happiest curled up with the people she loves, including kids, dogs, and pretty much anyone who'll sit still long enough. She talks in a soft, quiet voice and has a playful, clownish streak that keeps things fun without being demanding.
Exercise & energy
Moderate energy, she enjoys play sessions and chasing toys but is just as content lounging nearby. A little daily interactive play keeps her happy and fit.
Grooming & coat
That thick, curly coat looks high-maintenance but actually sheds very little, so occasional brushing (rather than constant combing) works best, too much can damage the curl. Regular bathing helps manage natural coat oils, since the curls hold onto them more than straight fur.
Training
Smart enough to learn routines and puzzle toys, and eager to be near you, which makes positive reinforcement easy. She's not a breed that needs pushing, she'll follow you around and pick up house rules just by being included.
Health to watch
Generally a sturdy breed, but as with many cats, keep an eye on dental health and weight, and ask your vet about polycystic kidney disease screening given some Rex-line ancestry. Regular checkups and a good diet go a long way toward a long, healthy life.
Good to know
She's a genuinely social cat who doesn't do well ignored for long stretches, great for households that want an affectionate companion always nearby, less ideal if you're gone constantly.
