Medium-sized versatile hunting dog of German origin with distinctive brown and white or brown roan feathered coat, known for excellent pointing and retrieving abilities and elegant appearance

More about the Small Münsterländer

The Small Münsterländer is a versatile hunting-pointing-retrieving dog breed that reached its current form in the area around Münster, Germany. The Large Münsterländer is from the same area, but was developed from different breeding stock and is not related as the names would suggest. Small Münsterländers bear a resemblance to both spaniels and setters but are more versatile while hunting on land and water. The Small Münsterländer is recognized by the Fédération Cynologique Internationale under Group 7, Section 1.2, Continental Pointing Dogs of Spaniel type, by the American Kennel Club as a Foundation Stock Service breed, and by The Kennel Club and the United Kennel Club as a gun dog. It is related to the Epagneul Français and the Drentsche Patrijshond.

Living with a Small Münsterländer

A versatile German hunting dog that pairs a setter's elegant good looks with a spaniel's eager, work-all-day drive.

Personality & fit

Intelligent, loyal, and eager to please, the Small Münsterländer bonds closely with its family and does best when it has a real job to do, hunting, sport, or at least daily mental work. They're adaptable and get along well with people and other dogs, but this isn't a breed content to just lounge around the house all day.

Exercise & energy

Bred as an all-around hunting companion, this breed needs serious daily exercise, a couple of hours of running, retrieving, or field work ideally. Without an outlet for that energy and drive, they can become restless or find their own (often destructive) hobbies.

Grooming & coat

The feathered brown-and-white or roan coat needs a brush a couple of times a week to prevent mats, especially behind the ears, legs, and tail. Regular ear checks are a good idea too since those long, feathered ears can trap moisture and debris.

Training

Highly intelligent and biddable, they pick up training quickly and genuinely enjoy having tasks to master. Positive, engaging methods work best, this is a thinking dog that gets bored with repetition, so keep sessions varied and purposeful.

Health to watch

Generally a robust breed, but like many active sporting dogs, hip dysplasia and eye conditions are worth screening for with a reputable breeder. Keeping them lean and active supports joint health throughout their long 12-14 year lifespan.

Good to know

This is a dog for people who want an active partner, not a couch companion, hunters, hikers, and sport-dog enthusiasts are a natural fit. Without enough physical and mental engagement, that intelligence and energy can turn into boredom-driven mischief.
