Segugio Italiano

Dog breed

An ancient Italian scenthound of noble appearance with medium-sized, athletic build and distinctive hound features. Bred for speed and endurance in hunting, the breed comes in two coat varieties: shorthaired (pelo raso) and wirehaired (pelo forte), renowned for exceptional scenting ability.

Living with a Segugio Italiano

An ancient Italian scenthound built for the long chase, nose-driven, tireless, and devoted to its people once the workday's done.

Personality & fit

The Segugio Italiano is smart, loyal, and eager to please, but it's also independent-minded in the way hounds bred to trail game for hours tend to be. They bond closely with family and generally do well with other dogs, especially if raised with them, thanks to their pack-hunting background.

Exercise & energy

This is a high-endurance breed that needs real daily exercise, long runs, hikes, or scent work, not just a stroll around the block. A securely fenced yard matters, because once that nose catches a trail, recall can go out the window.

Grooming & coat

Coat care is easy either way: the shorthaired variety needs just an occasional brush, while the wirehaired coat wants brushing every week or two to clear loose hair and debris. Both shed lightly and don't need much beyond routine ear checks, since those long hound ears can trap moisture and dirt.

Training

Bright and willing to work with you, but their hunting instincts and independent streak mean training goes best with patience, consistency, and high-value rewards. Start scent-based recall games early and keep leash work non-negotiable given how easily they can lock onto a trail.

Health to watch

Generally a robust, healthy breed, but like other athletic hounds it's worth watching for hip dysplasia and ear infections given those low-hanging ears. Regular vet checkups, ear cleaning, and keeping them at a lean weight support that long working lifespan.

Good to know

This breed thrives with an active owner who can offer both physical outlets and mental stimulation, not an apartment dog for the sedentary. Their strong nose and prey drive mean off-leash freedom should be reserved for safely enclosed spaces.
