Dog breed

A powerful and graceful medium to large Arctic spitz breed with a thick, all-white double coat and distinctive 'Samoyed smile' created by the upturned corners of the mouth

More about the Samoyed

The Samoyed is a breed of herding dog with a thick, white, double-layered coat. They are spitz-type dogs which take their name from the Samoyedic peoples. Descending from the Nenets Herding Laika, they are domesticated animals that assist in herding, hunting, protection and sled-pulling.

Living with a Samoyed

A fluffy white bundle of joy that seems to smile at everyone, bred to work hard and cuddle harder.

Personality & fit

Samoyeds are friendly to a fault, they were bred to live in close quarters with their families and don't do well as loners or guard dogs. They're gentle with kids, sociable with strangers, and thrive on being included in whatever the household is doing.

Exercise & energy

These are working dogs with real stamina, so plan on an hour or more of exercise daily, walks, hikes, or a job to do like pulling or agility. Bored Samoyeds get vocal and destructive, so mental engagement matters as much as physical activity.

Grooming & coat

That famous white double coat sheds constantly and blows out heavily twice a year, so brushing two to three times a week (daily during shedding season) is a must to prevent mats. They're generally clean dogs that don't need frequent baths, just consistent brushing.

Training

Smart and eager to please, but with an independent streak from their working heritage, keep sessions positive, upbeat, and short to hold their interest. Their vocal nature means teaching a 'quiet' cue early is worthwhile.

Health to watch

Watch for hip dysplasia, progressive retinal atrophy, and a genetic kidney condition called Samoyed hereditary glomerulopathy, along with a tendency toward diabetes. A good breeder's health testing and regular vet checkups help catch issues early.

Good to know

That gorgeous coat and social nature mean Samoyeds aren't a low-maintenance or low-noise choice, they shed heavily, bark to communicate, and want to be near their people, not left alone in a yard.
