More about the Saint-Usuge Spaniel
The Saint-Usuge Spaniel is a breed of Spaniel originating in the Bresse region of France. The breed has origins dating back to at least the 16th century, but was nearly extinct by the end of World War II. Through the efforts of Father Robert Billard (1912โ2000), the breed was resurrected during the second half of the 20th century; its national breed club was founded in 1990. The breed was recognised by the Sociรฉtรฉ Centrale Canine in 2003.
Living with a Saint-Usuge Spaniel
A rare French gundog that combines a gentle, affectionate heart with the drive and stamina of a true field worker.
Personality & fit
Saint-Usuge Spaniels are devoted, eager-to-please companions who bond closely with their families and tend to be gentle with children and easygoing with other pets. They're intelligent and adaptable, doing well in both hunting roles and home life, but they want to be included, this isn't a breed content to be left on the sidelines.
Exercise & energy
These are energetic sporting dogs bred to point and retrieve, so they need a solid hour or more of exercise daily, ideally with room to run, sniff, and use that natural gundog instinct. Fetch, hikes, and scent games help satisfy both body and mind.
Grooming & coat
Their brown coat is moderate in length and needs a brush a couple of times a week to prevent tangles, with extra attention to the ears and feathering on the legs. Shedding is manageable but check ears regularly since floppy-eared breeds are prone to buildup and infection.
Training
Bright and eager to please, Saint-Usuge Spaniels typically train well with positive, reward-based methods and benefit from early socialization. Their hunting background means a strong nose and prey drive, so recall practice in secure areas pays off.
Health to watch
As a rare breed rebuilt from a small population, genetic diversity is worth keeping in mind, and like many spaniels they can be prone to ear infections and joint issues such as hip dysplasia. Routine vet checkups, ear care, and maintaining a healthy weight go a long way toward keeping them thriving.
Good to know
This is a rare breed outside France, so finding a puppy or breed-specific resources may take patience and research. They're best suited to active households that can give them both exercise and close companionship.
