More about the Pug
The Pug is a breed of dog with the physically distinctive features of a wrinkly, short-muzzled face, and curled tail. Pugs have a coat that is fine, smooth, soft, short, and glossy, neither hard nor woolly, coming in a variety of colors, most often fawn or black, and a compact, square body with well developed and thick muscles all over the body.
Living with a Pug
A comical, affectionate lap dog that lives to be with its people.
Personality & fit
Charming, mischievous, and endlessly sociable, Pugs are companion dogs through and through. They're even-tempered, great with kids, and hate being left out of anything.
Exercise & energy
Low needs, gentle walks and play. Keep it easy and avoid heat: their flat faces mean they overheat and tire quickly.
Grooming & coat
Short coat but a surprising amount of shedding, brush weekly. Clean the facial wrinkles regularly and keep the folds dry to prevent irritation.
Training
Willing but easily distracted by food and fun; short, upbeat sessions work best. Housetraining can take extra patience.
Health to watch
A brachycephalic breed prone to breathing trouble, eye injuries, and weight gain, plus some spinal conditions. Keep them lean and cool.
Good to know
Ideal for apartment living and companionship, but the flat-faced traits mean extra care in heat and possible vet costs.
