Living with a Mudi

A whip-smart, endlessly busy Hungarian farm dog who'd rather have a job than a nap.

Personality & fit

Mudis are sharp, alert, and deeply loyal to their people, often bonding closely with one household rather than being everybody's best friend. They're adaptable and versatile, happiest when given a task, whether that's herding, agility, or just being included in daily life, and can become watchful or vocal toward strangers without enough socialization.

Exercise & energy

Very high energy, this isn't a breed that's content with a short walk. Plan on serious daily exercise plus mental work like herding, agility, or scent games to keep that busy brain satisfied.

Grooming & coat

The wavy-to-curly coat is fairly low-maintenance and sheds moderately, needing a brush every week or two to prevent matting. Occasional baths and regular nail, ear, and teeth care round out the routine.

Training

Highly intelligent and eager to work, Mudis pick up commands fast and genuinely enjoy training sessions. They do best with an experienced, consistent handler who can channel their drive, mental boredom leads to problem-solving of the destructive kind.

Health to watch

Generally a hardy breed, but hip dysplasia and some eye conditions can show up, so ask breeders about health screening. Routine vet checkups and keeping them lean and active help catch issues early.

Good to know

This is a working dog at heart, best suited to active owners with time, space, and a real job or sport to offer, not ideal for apartment living or long hours alone.
