Keeshond
Dog breed
Medium-sized compact spitz with plush silver-gray double coat, fox-like face, distinctive spectacles markings around the eyes, and plumed tail curled over back
More about the Keeshond
The Keeshond is a medium-sized dog with a plush, two-layer coat of silver and black fur with a ruff and a curled tail. Their closest relatives are the German spitzes such as the Groรspitz, Mittelspitz, Kleinspitz, Zwergspitz (Dwarf-Spitz) or Pomeranian.
Living with a Keeshond
A fluffy, fox-faced charmer with built-in 'spectacles' and a personality that's all warmth, happiest when he's right in the middle of family life.
Personality & fit
Keeshonden are friendly, alert, and genuinely people-oriented, forming close bonds with their whole family rather than one person. They're outgoing with strangers and good with kids, but they don't love being left alone for long stretches, this is a dog who wants to be wherever you are.
Exercise & energy
Moderate energy, a couple of brisk walks or a good play session daily keeps them content. They're alert little watchdogs too, so mental stimulation (games, training, sniffing on walks) matters as much as physical exercise.
Grooming & coat
That plush double coat is the main event: expect regular shedding plus two major 'blowouts' a year that call for daily brushing. Weekly brushing the rest of the time prevents mats, especially around the ruff and britches.
Training
Smart and eager to please, Keeshonden pick up commands quickly and enjoy having a job to do. Their alertness can mean a talkative streak, so early training around barking triggers pays off.
Health to watch
Generally sturdy, but it's worth watching for hip dysplasia, hypothyroidism, and some eye conditions. A reputable breeder's health screenings and routine vet checkups help catch issues early.
Good to know
This is a dog who craves company, not a backyard-only pet, plan on including him in daily life. Budget time for coat care, especially during seasonal shedding, when the fur really flies.
