More about the German Shorthaired Pointer
The German Shorthaired Pointer or Deutsch Kurzhaar is a German breed of continental pointing dog of Braque type. It originated in the nineteenth century in what is now Germany. It is of medium size, and is an all-purpose gun dog suitable for hunting and retrieving on both land and water. It may also be kept as a companion dog.
Living with a German Shorthaired Pointer
An athletic, whip-smart hunting dog that would rather be running by your side than lounging on the couch.
Personality & fit
Friendly, eager to please, and full of drive, GSPs bond closely with their people and want to be included in everything. They do best with active families who can channel their smarts and energy into work, play, or sport rather than leaving them to invent their own fun.
Exercise & energy
Very high energy, expect to provide well over an hour of vigorous exercise a day, ideally with room to run, swim, or work a field. Without it, this breed can become restless, anxious, or destructive.
Grooming & coat
The short, dense coat is low-maintenance and sheds moderately year-round. A weekly brush keeps loose hair down and the coat looking sleek.
Training
Highly intelligent and motivated to work, GSPs pick up training quickly when it's consistent and engaging. Their sharp minds need real mental challenges, not just repetition, to stay satisfied and out of trouble.
Health to watch
Generally sturdy, but keep an eye on hip dysplasia, bloat (gastric torsion), and eye or ear issues common in floppy-eared breeds. Regular vet checks, feeding smaller meals to reduce bloat risk, and routine ear cleaning help keep them healthy.
Good to know
This is not a low-key apartment dog. GSPs thrive with active owners who hike, run, hunt, or do dog sports. Give them a job and plenty of exercise, and you'll have a devoted, joyful companion.
