Living with a Gascon Saintongeois

A tall, elegant French scenthound built for the long hunt, calm and affectionate at home, but happiest when there's a trail to follow.

Personality & fit

Gentle, loyal, and even-tempered, the Gascon Saintongeois is a pack dog at heart, it bonds closely with its family and generally gets along well with other dogs. That said, its nose and hunting instincts run deep, so small pets or unfamiliar cats may trigger a chase.

Exercise & energy

This is an endurance athlete, not a couch companion, expect to provide long daily walks, runs, or hikes plus mental work like scent games. A securely fenced yard is a must, since a good scent will override recall in an untrained dog.

Grooming & coat

The short, dense tricolor coat is low-maintenance, a weekly brush handles loose hair and keeps shedding in check. Check those long, low-hanging ears regularly for dirt or moisture to prevent infections.

Training

Intelligent and work-focused, this breed responds well to consistent, patient training that gives it a job to do, scent work is a natural fit. Early socialization and reliable recall work are especially important given its hound instincts.

Health to watch

Like many large, deep-chested breeds, watch for hip dysplasia and bloat (gastric torsion), feeding smaller meals and avoiding vigorous exercise right after eating can help. Routine ear checks and vet visits will catch most issues early.

Good to know

This breed truly needs a job or serious daily exercise, it was bred to run for hours, and without an outlet for that energy and instinct, it can become bored or vocal. Best suited to active households, ideally with hunting, scent work, or lots of open space to explore.
