More about the Finnish Lapphund
The Finnish Lapphund is a hardy, easy-going, medium-size breed of Spitz type. Traditionally it has been used for herding reindeer. Although it is one of the most popular dog breeds in its native country, Finland, it is not very numerous outside of the Nordic countries.
Living with a Finnish Lapphund
A fluffy, fox-faced reindeer herder with a calm heart and a watchful mind, happiest when it has a job and a family to keep an eye on.
Personality & fit
Friendly and even-tempered, Finnish Lapphunds are alert watchdogs without being nervous or snappy, and they tend to bond closely with their whole family. Their herding background shows up as a love of routine and a habit of keeping tabs on everyone in the house, great for families and multi-pet homes that appreciate a dog who's both social and sensible.
Exercise & energy
Moderate to high energy, a couple of good walks plus some mental work (herding games, scent work, obedience) keep them satisfied. They're adaptable enough for suburban life but do best with a securely fenced yard and daily outlets for that herding brain.
Grooming & coat
That thick arctic double coat sheds steadily and blows heavily twice a year, so plan on brushing weekly (daily during heavy shedding) to prevent mats and keep loose fur under control. They're built for cold, so they're not big fans of hot climates without shade and water.
Training
Smart, eager to please, and food-motivated, Finnish Lapphunds pick up commands quickly and enjoy having a task. Early socialization helps channel their natural alertness so barking at every passerby doesn't become a habit.
Health to watch
Generally a robust breed, but it's worth watching for hip dysplasia, progressive retinal atrophy (an eye condition), and some hereditary eye issues. Routine vet checkups, eye screening, and keeping them at a healthy weight go a long way toward a long, active life.
Good to know
They're natural vocalizers, bred to bark at reindeer and predators, so households sensitive to noise should plan on training a 'quiet' cue early.
