More about the English Setter
The English Setter is a medium-size breed of dog. It is part of the setter group, which includes the red Irish Setters, Irish Red and White Setters, and black-and-tan Gordon Setters. The mainly white coat has long silky fringes on the back of the legs, under the belly and on the tail. The coat features flecks of colour, and the different colour varieties are referred to as 'belton'.
Living with a English Setter
A gentle, speckled beauty who hunts with grace and loves with her whole heart, equal parts athlete and cuddler.
Personality & fit
English Setters are famously sweet-natured, affectionate, and eager to be near their people, often described as gentle even by working-dog standards. They tend to get along well with kids, other dogs, and even cats, making them a great fit for active families who want a dog that's as happy curled up on the couch as it is in the field.
Exercise & energy
Bred as gundogs, they have real stamina and need at least an hour of vigorous exercise a day, running, hiking, or a securely fenced yard to roam in. Without enough outlet, that famous good nature can turn restless or destructive.
Grooming & coat
That silky, feathered coat is gorgeous but needs work: brush a few times a week to prevent mats, especially behind the ears, on the legs, and around the tail. Regular ear checks are also important since their floppy ears can trap moisture and debris.
Training
Smart and people-pleasing, English Setters generally train well with positive, reward-based methods, though their hunting instincts mean a strong recall and leash habits should be built early. They can be a bit sensitive, so patience and encouragement work far better than a heavy hand.
Health to watch
Watch for hip dysplasia, hypothyroidism, and deafness (which can occur in white-coated dogs), along with occasional allergies. A reputable breeder's health screenings and regular vet visits go a long way toward catching issues early.
Good to know
This is a dog that wants to be included in daily life, not left alone in a yard, loneliness and lack of exercise are the biggest challenges owners report. Given enough activity and companionship, they're remarkably easygoing housemates.
