More about the Donggyeongi
The Donggyeongi (Korean: ๋๊ฒฝ์ด), also called daeng gyeon (๋๊ฒฌ) or Donggyeong gae (๋๊ฒฝ๊ฐ), is a naturally bob-tailed dog breed that originated in Korea. It is an endangered breed of some 600 dogs in total and has been protected as a natural heritage in South Korea since 2012.
Living with a Donggyeongi
A rare, naturally bob-tailed spitz from ancient Korea, combining watchful alertness with an unexpectedly gentle, easygoing heart.
Personality & fit
The Donggyeongi is friendly and loyal without being clingy, alert enough to make a good watchdog but gentle enough to settle happily into family life. Intelligent and adaptable, they tend to bond closely with their people and do well with owners who want a courageous but even-tempered companion.
Exercise & energy
Moderate energy, a daily walk plus some playtime keeps this breed content. They're adaptable to different living situations, but like most spitz-type dogs, they still appreciate having a job or a game to focus on.
Grooming & coat
Their double coat sheds year-round with a heavier blow-out during seasonal changes. Weekly brushing handles routine upkeep, with more frequent sessions during shedding periods.
Training
Smart and eager to please, the Donggyeongi generally responds well to consistent, reward-based training. Early socialization helps channel their natural alertness into confidence rather than wariness of new people or situations.
Health to watch
As a landrace breed with a small, carefully protected population, the Donggyeongi is generally considered robust, but any responsible breeder should screen for hip and joint health common to medium active dogs. Regular vet checkups are the best way to catch anything early.
Good to know
This is a genuinely rare breed, only a few hundred exist, protected as a natural heritage animal in South Korea, so finding one outside Korea is uncommon and adopting one comes with a real sense of stewardship for the breed's future.
