More about the Cardigan Welsh Corgi

The Cardigan Welsh Corgi is one of two different varieties of livestock-herding dog breeds known as Welsh Corgis, with the other being the Pembroke Welsh Corgi. It is one of the oldest breeds of the British Isles. Cardigan Welsh corgis are known to be an extremely loyal and trainable dog breed, naturally attuned to herding many different animals, from poultry and waterfowl to large livestock such as sheep and cattle. They are also versatile and can live in a variety of settings.

Living with a Cardigan Welsh Corgi

A long, low, big-eared herder with a fox's brush of a tail and a surprisingly large personality packed into a small body.

Personality & fit

Affectionate and loyal with their people, Cardigans are watchful and alert, making them naturally good little watchdogs. They're smart and adaptable, doing well in homes, farms, or apartments as long as their brains and herding instincts get an outlet.

Exercise & energy

Moderate to high energy, daily walks plus playtime or herding-style games keep them satisfied. They enjoy having a job to do, and activities like fetch or agility tap into their working roots nicely.

Grooming & coat

The double coat sheds steadily and heavily during seasonal blowouts, so weekly brushing (more when it's shedding season) keeps loose fur in check. Baths as needed and regular nail trims round out the routine.

Training

Highly intelligent and eager to learn, Cardigans respond well to positive, consistent training and often pick things up fast. Their herding instinct can show up as nipping at heels or chasing, so redirecting that energy early helps.

Health to watch

Their long backs make them prone to spinal issues like intervertebral disc disease, so keeping them at a healthy weight and limiting jumping from heights helps protect their joints. Hip dysplasia and progressive retinal atrophy (an eye condition) are also worth discussing with a vet.

Good to know

That long, low body isn't built for stairs or rough jumping, so a little extra care around furniture and steps goes a long way. They're a package deal of big personality and big shedding in a small frame.
