More about the Bulldog
The Bulldog is a British breed of dog of mastiff type. It may also be known as the English Bulldog or British Bulldog. It is a stocky, muscular dog of medium size, with a large head, thick folds of skin around the face and shoulders and a relatively flat face with a protruding lower jaw. Selective breeding for appearance has led to the Bulldog's increased susceptibility to various health problems including brachycephaly, hip dysplasia and heat sensitivity. The dogs are illegal to breed in the Netherlands because of concerns about their quality of life.
Living with a Bulldog
A low-key, affectionate homebody with a tough-guy face and a total marshmallow personality underneath.
Personality & fit
Bulldogs are calm, loyal, and remarkably patient, making them wonderful companions for families, singles, and seniors alike. They're not big barkers or troublemakers, most are content to hang out near their people and take life at an easy pace.
Exercise & energy
Low to moderate energy, short walks and play sessions are plenty, and they tire out fast. Because of their flat faces, they overheat easily, so exercise in cool morning or evening hours and skip strenuous activity on hot or humid days.
Grooming & coat
The short coat sheds moderately and is easy to brush, but those facial wrinkles need regular wiping and drying to prevent skin irritation or infection. Keep an eye on the tail pocket (if present) and ears too, folds trap moisture.
Training
Bulldogs are smart but stubborn, so patient, reward-based training works far better than repetition or pressure. They respond well to food motivation and short, upbeat sessions, long drills just bore them.
Health to watch
This breed's flat face (brachycephalic) can make breathing, heat regulation, and even sleep noisier and harder, so avoiding overheating and extra weight matters a lot. Hip dysplasia and skin fold infections are also common, regular vet checkups and keeping wrinkles clean go a long way toward a comfortable life.
Good to know
Bulldogs do best in moderate climates with air conditioning access, heat and humidity can be genuinely dangerous for them. They're an easygoing, low-exercise breed, but their health needs a bit more hands-on attention than most.
