Living with a Boykin Spaniel

A compact, cheerful water dog bred to hop in and out of small boats all day and still want to play fetch at night.

Personality & fit

Friendly, smart, and eager to please, Boykin Spaniels bond closely with their families and do well with kids and other dogs. They're happiest when included in daily life and activities rather than left to entertain themselves.

Exercise & energy

Bred for a full day of hunting, so they need real daily exercise, a run, a swim, or a good hour of play works well. Water games are a favorite and a great outlet for their retrieving instincts.

Grooming & coat

Their medium-length wavy coat needs brushing two to three times a week to prevent mats, especially behind the ears and legs, plus regular ear checks since those floppy ears can trap moisture. Occasional trimming keeps things tidy, and shedding is moderate.

Training

Intelligent and biddable, they respond well to positive, reward-based training and pick up retrieving games fast. Early socialization and consistent structure help channel their energy into good habits rather than boredom-driven mischief.

Health to watch

Generally sturdy, but keep an eye on hip dysplasia, hereditary cataracts, and ear infections given their drop ears. Routine vet checks, ear cleaning after swims, and maintaining a healthy weight go a long way toward a long, active life.

Good to know

This is a true sporting dog at heart, even non-hunting families should plan on plenty of activity, ideally with access to water, to keep them content.
