More about the Blue Picardy Spaniel
The Blue Picardy Spaniel is a breed of Spaniel originating in France, from the area around the mouth of the River Somme, around the start of the 20th century. It is descended from Picardy Spaniels and English Setters, and is described as a quiet breed that requires much exercise due to its stamina. It is especially good with children. Similar to the Picardy Spaniel, it has a distinctive coloured coat. The breed is recognized by the Fédération Cynologique Internationale, the Canadian Kennel Club, the Société Centrale Canine, and the United Kennel Club. It is not yet recognized by the American Kennel Club though registration services are provided though the AKC's Foundation Stock Service. The Blue Picardy Spaniel can be found in its greatest numbers in France and Canada.
Living with a Blue Picardy Spaniel
A rare, gentle French gundog with a striking blue-roan coat and a calm, devoted heart that thrives on both fieldwork and family life.
Personality & fit
Gentle, calm, and deeply affectionate, the Blue Picardy Spaniel bonds closely with its family and is especially good with children. Intelligent and even-tempered, it's a sporting breed without the hyper edge some gundogs have, making it a good fit for active households that still want a mellow presence at home.
Exercise & energy
Don't let the calm demeanor fool you, this breed has real stamina and was bred to work the field all day. Daily exercise like long walks, hikes, or swimming is important, and if you hunt or do field sports, even better.
Grooming & coat
The medium-length, wavy coat sheds moderately and needs brushing a couple of times a week to prevent mats, especially behind the ears and legs. Regular ear checks are a good idea too, since those long, feathered ears can trap moisture and debris.
Training
Smart and eager to please, Blue Picardy Spaniels typically train easily with positive, reward-based methods. Their quiet, cooperative nature makes them a good choice for a first-time gundog owner, though early socialization still helps them settle confidently into new situations.
Health to watch
Generally a healthy, sturdy breed, but like many medium-to-large gundogs, hip dysplasia and ear infections are worth watching for. Routine vet checkups, ear cleaning, and keeping them at a healthy weight will help them stay active for years.
Good to know
This is a rare breed outside France and Canada, so finding a puppy may take patience and travel. It's best suited to owners who want an affectionate companion with genuine outdoor stamina, not just a couch dog.
