More about the Bichon Frisé
The Bichon Frisé or Bichon à Poil Frisé is a Franco-Belgian breed of small toy dog of bichon type. It was recognised by the Société Centrale Canine in 1933 and by the Fédération Cynologique Internationale in 1959.
Living with a Bichon Frisé
A cheerful little cotton-ball of a dog that seems to genuinely enjoy every single moment of its day, especially the ones spent with you.
Personality & fit
Bichons are affectionate, playful, and people-oriented, they were bred to be companions and take that job seriously. They're generally easygoing with kids, other dogs, and strangers, and don't do well spending long hours alone.
Exercise & energy
Moderate energy, a couple of short walks plus some indoor play or a romp in the yard usually covers it. They're happy to match a mellow household's pace but still enjoy a good game of fetch.
Grooming & coat
That signature curly white coat needs real commitment: brushing every couple of days to prevent mats, plus a trim every 4-6 weeks to keep it manageable. On the plus side, they shed very little, which makes them a popular pick for people with allergies.
Training
Smart and eager to please, Bichons pick up commands and tricks readily, and they enjoy the attention training brings. Housebreaking can take extra patience with this breed, so consistency and a regular schedule help a lot.
Health to watch
Watch for skin allergies, dental crowding, and luxating patella (a kneecap that slips out of place), all manageable with regular vet checks. Their eyes can also be prone to tearing, so keeping the fur around them clean helps prevent staining and irritation.
Good to know
Grooming isn't optional with this breed, budget for regular professional trims or plan to learn to do it yourself. They also thrive on companionship, so they're a better fit for homes where someone's around most of the day.
