Bernese Mountain Dog

Dog breed

Large, strong, and sturdy working dog with a distinctive long tricolored coat and calm, gentle temperament. One of four types of Swiss Mountain Dogs, known for being good-natured, loyal, and an excellent family companion.

More about the Bernese Mountain Dog

The Bernese Mountain Dog, German: Berner Sennenhund or Dürrbächler, is a large dog breed originating from the canton of Bern, Switzerland and the Swiss Alps. It is one of four Sennenhund-type breeds, with ancestral roots in Roman mastiffs. The name Berner refers to the breed's area of origin in the canton of Bern, and Sennenhund is derived from the German Senne and Hund ("hound/dog"), as they accompanied the alpine herders and dairymen called Senne. Historically used as a general farm dog, the large Sennenhunde also pulled carts as draft animals. The breed was formally recognized in 1912.

Living with a Bernese Mountain Dog

A gentle giant with a stunning tricolor coat, happiest when it's close to its family and has a job to do.

Personality & fit

Calm, affectionate, and loyal, Bernese Mountain Dogs bond deeply with their families and are typically patient with kids and gentle with other pets. They can be a bit reserved with strangers but rarely aggressive, early socialization helps them feel confident in new situations.

Exercise & energy

Moderate energy, a couple of daily walks plus some yard time or light hiking suits them well. They're not marathon runners, especially in heat (their thick coat makes them prone to overheating), but they do enjoy pulling carts or backpacking, nods to their working-dog roots.

Grooming & coat

That long double coat sheds heavily, especially during seasonal blowouts, so plan on brushing two to three times a week (daily during peak shedding). Regular baths and nail trims round out the routine, and keep an eye on those floppy ears for buildup.

Training

Smart and eager to please, Berners generally respond well to positive, reward-based training. Start early with basic manners and leash skills, they grow into big, strong dogs fast, and good habits are much easier to build than to fix later.

Health to watch

This breed is prone to certain cancers, hip and elbow dysplasia, and bloat, and their large size contributes to a shorter average lifespan than many breeds. Choosing a reputable breeder, keeping them at a healthy weight, and staying current on vet checkups can help catch issues early.

Good to know

They do best as true family dogs living indoors, not left alone in a yard, isolation doesn't suit their affectionate nature. Given their size and shorter lifespan, many owners cherish every year and invest early in health screenings and pet insurance.
