Living with a Basset Bleu de Gascogne

A low-slung French tracker with a striking blue-mottled coat, a nose that never quits, and a laid-back, loyal heart.

Personality & fit

Gentle and affectionate with family, this breed is also independent-minded, a trait bred into it for working alone on scent trails. Loyal but not clingy, it does well with respectful kids and other dogs, though it can be aloof with strangers until it warms up.

Exercise & energy

Moderate energy, but that nose can take over fast, a securely fenced yard and daily walks (30-45 minutes) are a must. Scent games and sniff-heavy walks satisfy its hound instincts better than repetitive fetch.

Grooming & coat

The short, dense coat sheds moderately and is easy to keep up with a weekly brush. Those long, low-hanging ears trap moisture and debris, so check and clean them regularly to prevent infections.

Training

Smart but independent, this breed can be stubborn when a scent trail seems more interesting than a command. Patient, reward-based training and a strong recall (started early) matter, since that nose can lead it wandering off if given the chance.

Health to watch

Like many long-backed breeds, it can be prone to back problems, so keeping it at a healthy weight and discouraging jumping from heights helps protect its spine. Ear infections are also a risk given those droopy ears, regular cleaning goes a long way.

Good to know

This is a nose-first dog, once it picks up a scent, recall can go out the window, so a fenced yard and leash outside are essential rather than optional.
