Bassador

Dog breed

Medium-to-large crossbreed with a long, sturdy body, short legs, and distinctive droopy ears of the Basset Hound combined with the friendly face and temperament of a Labrador Retriever

More about the Bassador

Dog crossbreeds are dogs which have been crossbred or selectively bred from two or more recognized dog breeds. Generally considered a specific type of mixed-breed dog, dog crossbreeds are not recognised as breeds in their own right, and do not necessarily breed true. However, historic crossbreeding has led to established breeds, such as the Cesky Terrier.

Living with a Bassador

A low-slung, big-hearted goofball who combines a Lab's love of people with a Basset's laid-back, nose-first approach to life.

Personality & fit

Friendly, loyal, and gentle, Bassadors tend to get along well with kids, other dogs, and pretty much anyone who'll scratch their ears. They're smart but can have an independent, scent-driven streak inherited from their Basset side, so don't expect a robotic level of obedience, just a devoted, easygoing companion.

Exercise & energy

Moderate energy, daily walks and sniff-filled outings will keep them content, though their short legs and long back mean they're not built for high-impact activity like intense jumping or long runs. A couple of 20-30 minute walks plus some yard time usually does the trick.

Grooming & coat

Their short coat sheds a moderate amount and is easy to maintain with a weekly brush. Don't skip cleaning those long, droopy ears regularly, since they're prone to trapping moisture and debris.

Training

Food motivation from the Lab side makes treats a great training tool, but the Basset's stubborn, nose-led focus means patience and consistency matter. Keep sessions short, upbeat, and scent-work friendly, and leash train early since they'll happily follow their nose right off the path.

Health to watch

Because of that long back and short legs, watch for back and joint issues, and keep an eye on hips and ears too. Maintaining a healthy weight is especially important here, extra pounds put real strain on that unique body shape.

Good to know

Great for families who want an affectionate, mellow dog without a marathon exercise habit, just budget time for ear care and be mindful of stairs and jumping to protect that long back.
