More about the Bankhar Dog
The Bankhar dog, is a landrace livestock guarding dog. Originally bred by the Buryat-Mongol people, their success contributed to their spread across Buryatia and Mongolia and into adjacent regions before they were nearly annihilated in the mid-20th century. Bankhar dogs are prized for their intellect and perseverance even in hostile weather conditions. They are loyal and affectionate with their families, but formidable against intruders, including humans, wolves, eagles and snow leopards.
Living with a Bankhar Dog
A massive, ancient guardian built for the Mongolian steppe, calm and devoted at home, but all business when protecting flock or family.
Personality & fit
Bankhars are loyal, watchful, and independent thinkers who bond deeply with their family but stay reserved around strangers. They were bred to make their own decisions guarding livestock across vast, harsh land, so they're not natural people-pleasers, this is a dog for experienced owners who respect a strong-willed protector rather than want an eager sidekick.
Exercise & energy
Moderate to high energy, but it looks different from a typical high-drive breed. Bankhars are built for endurance and patrolling rather than fetch. They need daily space to walk, roam, and survey their territory; a securely fenced yard or acreage suits them far better than city life.
Grooming & coat
Their thick double coat is made for extreme cold and sheds heavily, especially with seasonal blowouts. Weekly brushing (more during shedding season) keeps loose fur under control, and they generally don't need frequent baths.
Training
Smart and capable, but independent enough to question commands that don't make sense to them, patient, consistent, respect-based training works far better than repetition or force. Early socialization is essential given their natural guarding instincts and wariness of strangers.
Health to watch
As a hardy landrace breed, Bankhars are generally robust, but their large size means hip and joint health are worth monitoring as they age. Routine vet checkups and keeping them at a healthy weight help protect their joints over a long life.
Good to know
This is a serious guardian breed, not a casual pet, they do best with experienced owners, room to work or patrol, and a job that matches their protective instincts. They're not ideal for small homes, frequent visitors, or first-time dog owners.
