More about the Azawakh
The Azawakh is a breed of dog from West Africa. With ancient origins, it is raised throughout the Sahelian zone of Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso. This region includes the Azawagh Valley for which the breed is named. While commonly associated with the nomadic Tuareg people, the dogs are also bred and owned by other ethnic groups, such as the Peulh, Bella, and Hausa. The Azawakh is more related to the Sloughi than it is to the Saluki.
Living with a Azawakh
A lean, lightning-fast sighthound from the Sahel who runs like the wind and loves like a devoted shadow, but only to the people it chooses.
Personality & fit
Azawakhs are deeply loyal to their own family but reserved, even aloof, with strangers, this is a dog that watches, assesses, and protects rather than greets everyone with a wagging tail. They're affectionate and can be quite sensitive at home, but they need an owner who respects their independent streak rather than expecting Labrador-level friendliness with the world.
Exercise & energy
High energy with a strong prey drive and serious speed, daily sprints in a securely fenced area plus long walks keep them satisfied. A fenced yard is a must, since their sighthound instinct to chase means recall off-leash can't be relied on.
Grooming & coat
The short, fine coat is about as low-maintenance as it gets, an occasional brush and wipe-down cover most of it. Their thin skin and lack of body fat mean they feel the cold, so a coat or sweater is worth having for chilly weather.
Training
Smart and capable but independent-minded, Azawakhs respond best to patient, positive training and an owner who builds trust rather than relies on repetition or pressure. Early socialization helps them feel more at ease around new people and situations, though some natural reserve will likely remain.
Health to watch
Generally a hardy, healthy breed, but keep an eye on heart issues and sensitivity to anesthesia and certain medications, which is common in lean sighthounds with low body fat. Regular vet checkups and letting your vet know the breed before any procedure go a long way.
Good to know
This is a dog built for a household that values calm companionship over constant socializing, they bond intensely with their people but aren't natural greeters of strangers or other dogs. Given their thin coat and minimal fat, they're not built for extreme cold without some help.
