More about the Australian Silky Terrier
The Australian Silky Terrier or simply Silky Terrier is a small breed of dog of the terrier dog type. The breed was developed in Australia, although the ancestral types and breeds were from Great Britain. It is closely related to the Australian Terrier and the Yorkshire Terrier. The breed is called the Silky Terrier in North America, but is called the Australian Silky Terrier in its country of origin and in the rest of the world.
Living with a Australian Silky Terrier
A tiny terrier with a big personality and a shiny blue-and-tan coat that turns heads on every walk.
Personality & fit
Confident, alert, and full of terrier spirit, the Silky Terrier is affectionate with its people but always ready to investigate a noise or chase something small and fast. They do well with older kids and adults who appreciate a feisty, engaged companion, though their size means play should be supervised with young children.
Exercise & energy
Moderate but real energy needs, a daily walk plus some active playtime keeps them satisfied. They're curious and quick, so a securely fenced yard matters more than acreage.
Grooming & coat
That signature silky coat needs brushing several times a week to prevent tangles, and many owners opt for a shorter trim to cut down on upkeep. Shedding is minimal, making them a decent option for people sensitive to loose hair.
Training
Smart and eager to engage, but with a stubborn independent streak typical of terriers. Consistent, positive training and early socialization help channel their alertness (and vocal tendencies) in good directions.
Health to watch
Generally hardy, but watch for luxating patellas (kneecap slipping), dental crowding common in small breeds, and tracheal sensitivity, a harness instead of a collar helps. Routine vet checks catch most issues early.
Good to know
Their terrier instincts mean a strong prey drive, so small pets and unfenced areas need extra caution. This is a big dog's personality in a small body, they thrive on being included, not sidelined.
