Argentine Pila

Dog breed

An elegant and slender hairless dog native to Argentina, known for its soft, warm skin and lively, alert temperament. The breed comes in three size varieties and is prized as a companion dog.

More about the Argentine Pila

The Argentine Pila or Perro Pila Argentino is an Argentine breed of hairless dog. It was recognised by the Asociación Canina Argentina in 2007. It forms part of the large group of South American hairless breeds and types, but is distinct from other modern breeds such as the Chinese Crested, the Peruvian Hairless and the Xoloitzcuintle. It is generally dark-skinned, or light-skinned with dark spots. Hairlessness in this breed along with other South American breeds is caused by a dominant mutation in the FOXI3 gene, which results in a loss of hair as the mutation affects ectodermal development. As the FOXI3 gene not only has an influence on hair follicles but the formation of teeth as well; the same mutation also causes dental differences.

Living with a Argentine Pila

A warm-skinned, hairless companion from Argentina who's as alert and affectionate as they come, coming in three sizes to fit almost any household.

Personality & fit

Gentle, playful, and deeply attached to their people, the Argentine Pila thrives on companionship and doesn't do well left alone for long stretches. They're alert watchdogs who notice everything, but their affectionate nature makes them better suited to a loving home than guard duty.

Exercise & energy

Moderate energy, a daily walk plus some playtime keeps them happy and fit. They're agile and enjoy interactive games, but they're not marathon runners, especially in the smaller size varieties.

Grooming & coat

No coat means no brushing, but bare skin needs its own care: regular moisturizing to prevent dryness, sunscreen or protective clothing in strong sun, and a sweater in cold weather. Check skin regularly for irritation, and expect the occasional blemish or blackhead since there's no fur to hide it.

Training

Smart and eager to bond with their owner, the Pila responds well to positive, consistent training. Early socialization helps their natural alertness stay confident rather than wary of new people and situations.

Health to watch

Because the same gene that causes hairlessness also affects tooth development, missing or unusual teeth are common, regular dental checkups matter more than usual. Their exposed skin can be prone to sunburn, dryness, and minor injuries, so a little extra skincare goes a long way.

Good to know

This is a breed built for closeness, they want to be near you, indoors, and protected from temperature extremes, so plan on doggy sweaters, sunscreen, and a spot on the couch.
