More about the Andalusian Terrier

The Andalusian Terrier or Sherry Terrier is a Spanish breed of dog of terrier type. Its Spanish name reflects its main occupation: hunting rats and mice hidden between barrels in the wineries of Andalusia in Spain. It was recognised as an indigenous Spanish breed in 2000 by the Spanish Ministry of Agriculture and by the Spanish Kennel Club, the Real Sociedad Canina de Espaรฑa.

Living with a Andalusian Terrier

A quick, clever little ratter from the Spanish wine country, always alert and ready to spring into action.

Personality & fit

Smart, courageous, and loyal, the Andalusian Terrier bonds closely with its family and stays sharp-eyed for anything moving. True to its terrier roots, it's playful and energetic, doing best with owners who enjoy an engaged, spirited companion rather than a couch potato.

Exercise & energy

This is an active, athletic breed that needs daily exercise to stay content, brisk walks, play sessions, and chances to run and sniff. Without enough outlets, that terrier energy can turn into restlessness or mischief.

Grooming & coat

The short, predominantly white coat is low-maintenance, a weekly brush handles loose hair and keeps it looking clean. Regular nail trims and ear checks round out the routine.

Training

Intelligent and eager, this breed picks up training quickly when it's kept fun and consistent. Its strong prey drive and alertness mean early socialization and reliable recall are especially worthwhile.

Health to watch

Generally a hardy, long-lived breed with few widely documented health issues, thanks in part to its working-dog history. Routine vet checkups, dental care, and weight management are the best ways to keep it thriving for its full 12-15 years.

Good to know

Still rare outside Spain, so finding a breeder or rescue may take patience. Its hunting instincts mean small pets like hamsters or rodents aren't the best housemates.
