American Foxhound

Gentle and friendly with people, American Foxhounds are pack dogs at their core, they do best with company, whether human, canine, or both. They're independent thinkers bred to work far from their handler, so don't expect the clingy devotion of some breeds; expect a good-natured housemate who's happiest with a job or a companion.

Very high energy, these dogs were built to run for hours and need serious daily exercise, not just a stroll around the block. A securely fenced yard and long runs, hikes, or scent-work games help burn off that stamina; without it, expect restlessness and that famous baying to ring out.

The short, dense coat sheds moderately and is low-maintenance, a weekly brush keeps loose hair down and the coat healthy. Check those long, floppy ears regularly for dirt or moisture to prevent infections.

Smart but independent, American Foxhounds follow their nose before they follow commands, so recall in unfenced areas is a real challenge. Patient, positive, food-motivated training and early socialization pay off, and scent-based games channel their instincts productively.

Generally a sturdy, healthy breed, but watch for hip dysplasia, ear infections, and thrombocytopathy (a blood platelet condition) that can occasionally show up in the line. Regular vet checkups and keeping them lean and active support long-term joint and overall health.

That melodious bay is adorable outdoors but can be a lot in close quarters, this breed suits homes with space to roam and neighbors who won't mind the occasional howl.
