Malayan
Cat breed
Malayans love to explore and even enjoy traveling by way of a cat carrier. They are quite a talkative and rather loud cat with an apparent strong will. These cats will make sure that you give it the attention it seeks and always seem to want to be held and hugged. They will constantly interact with people, even strangers. They love to play and cuddle.
Living with a Malayan
A chatty, velvet-coated shadow who'd rather be in your arms than anywhere else in the house.
Personality & fit
Affectionate to the point of clingy, Malayans bond hard and want to be part of everything you do, including conversations, which they'll happily join with plenty of vocal opinions. They're social with kids, other pets, and even strangers, making them a great fit for busy, people-filled households.
Exercise & energy
High energy and endlessly curious, they need daily play sessions and enrichment to stay satisfied, think wand toys, puzzle feeders, and climbing space. A bored Malayan will find its own entertainment, so keep it engaged.
Grooming & coat
Their short, glossy coat is about as low-maintenance as it gets, an occasional wipe-down or light brushing handles the minimal shedding just fine.
Training
Smart and eager for interaction, Malayans pick up routines and simple tricks quickly, especially when there's attention or a treat involved. They respond best to positive, engaged training since they crave the one-on-one time anyway.
Health to watch
Generally a sturdy, healthy breed, but as a Burmese relative they can be prone to some inherited eye and dental issues, so regular vet checkups are worthwhile. Keep an eye on their weight too, since their food motivation can lead to overindulging.
Good to know
This is not a background cat. Malayans want to be held, talked to, and included constantly, so they're best suited to owners who are home often and love a vocal, velcro-style companion.
