Lykoi
Cat breed
Nicknamed the 'werewolf cat' for its partially hairless, roan black coat and unmasked face, the Lykoi arose from a natural mutation in domestic shorthairs and was developed in Tennessee from 2011. Under the wild look is a devoted, dog-like companion with a strong prey drive and a big motor for play.
More about the Lykoi
The Lykoi is a breed of cat derived from a natural mutation causing a form of hypotrichia found in domestic short-haired cats. This mutation results in sparse, patchy fur, particularly around the face, giving individuals a "wolf-like" appearance, as well as periodic full or partial molting. Lykoi cats are highly susceptible to cysts and other skin problems.
Living with a Lykoi
A wolf-faced original who looks wild but acts like a devoted little shadow, always underfoot and up for a game.
Personality & fit
Curious, playful, and surprisingly dog-like, the Lykoi bonds tightly with its people and likes being part of whatever's happening in the house. They're smart and interactive, so they do best with owners who have time to engage with them rather than leave them to entertain themselves.
Exercise & energy
Moderate to high energy with a strong prey drive, think puzzle toys, wand chases, and anything that lets them stalk and pounce. Daily play sessions keep that big motor satisfied and out of trouble.
Grooming & coat
The sparse, patchy coat sheds and molts periodically, sometimes leaving the cat nearly bald for a while before it grows back in. Skin needs more attention than fur does, regular gentle wiping and checking for buildup or irritation helps, and their skin can run drier than a fully-coated cat's.
Training
Bright and food-motivated, Lykoi pick up routines and even simple tricks quickly. Their intelligence means they also get bored easily, so keep training sessions short, varied, and rewarding.
Health to watch
This breed can be prone to skin cysts and other dermatological issues given their unusual coat, so keep an eye out for new bumps, redness, or excessive scratching and get anything unusual checked early. Regular vet visits and a good skincare routine go a long way toward catching problems before they grow.
Good to know
That striking hairless-patched look means less fur around the house but more skin care than a typical shorthair, budget time for coat and skin checks, not just brushing.
