More about the Cymric
The Cymric is a Canadian cat breed. Some cat registries consider the Cymric a semi-long-haired variety of the Manx breed, rather than a separate breed. Except for the length of fur, in all other respects, the two varieties are the same, and kittens of either sort may appear in the same litter. The name comes from Cymru, the indigenous Welsh name of Wales, even though the breed is not associated with Wales. The name may have been chosen to provide a "Celtic" sounding moniker for the breed. While the breed's Manx bloodline originated from the Isle of Man, the long-haired variant is claimed to have been developed in Canada. The breed is called the Longhair Manx or a similar name by some registries.
Living with a Cymric
A tailless, teddy-bear-soft cat with a dog-like devotion to its people and a mischievous streak that keeps life interesting.
Personality & fit
Gentle, loyal, and endlessly affectionate, the Cymric bonds closely with its family and gets along well with kids and other pets, including dogs. They're clever and dexterous enough to open cabinets or doors, so don't be surprised if yours learns a few tricks you never taught it.
Exercise & energy
Surprisingly energetic for such a mellow-seeming cat, they enjoy climbing, chasing toys, and interactive play sessions throughout the day. A few dedicated play periods plus some vertical space (cat trees, shelves) will keep them happy and out of trouble.
Grooming & coat
That semi-long double coat sheds heavily and needs brushing two to three times a week to prevent mats, with daily attention during seasonal shedding. Regular grooming also cuts down on loose fur around the house.
Training
Smart and eager to engage, Cymrics pick up routines and even simple commands quickly, especially with treats and praise. Their intelligence means they also learn how to get what they want, so consistency helps keep counter-surfing and door-opening in check.
Health to watch
Because the tailless trait comes from a spinal mutation, some Cymrics can experience spine or hindquarter issues, so it's worth choosing a reputable breeder and keeping an eye on mobility as they age. Routine vet checkups help catch any concerns early.
Good to know
This is a social, people-oriented cat that doesn't love being left alone for long stretches, great for households that can offer company and playtime most days.
